September 16th 2009 My Custom-Made Rock Band Bass Pedal
I just got Beatles: Rock Band for my Wii, which I absolutely love. I have had a hard time putting down the drum sticks since I got it, and I have to say that I feel more and more every day that I am Ringo Starr! I have to say that this version of Rock Band is by far my favourite, and it isn’t only because I am a Beatles fan. The graphics are much better (in my opinion) than past versions of the game, and I think that it is a really nice touch that the group changes their looks as they progress through their careers. It is pretty amazing, and I am glad that the developers put the extra work into it.
On a side note, check out this article I read in IEEE magazine about how they developed the software for this game. It is a great article, and you really don’t need to be a tech geek to understand it. It’s just amazing how far technology has come.
Now, on to my custom pedal. Oh, it’s ghetto. VERY ghetto – but I love it. Let me tell you how it came to be:
I was rocking out on the drums, with delusions of being Ringo Starr, after getting my copy of of the game. I must have been rocking just a bit too hard because part way through “A Hard Day’s Night”, I snapped the bass pedal in half. I couldn’t believe that I had broken it, but I was more upset with the fact that I would have to buy a new set of drums (or at least a pedal) before I could play again (my wife would have killed me if I had bought the bundle, so no, I did not have a backup drum kit to use).
This was just unacceptable to me, so I took it upon myself to grab a piece of wood, and attach it to my pedal (I knew gluing it wouldn’t accomplish anything). I drilled some holes into the plastic on both pieces, then put some screws through to the wood. The result is what you see in the picture below. Yes, I know it’s not the prettiest thing ever, but it works really well. In fact, the added weight of the wood makes the pedal easier to play, and I think that I am able to play better as a result.
What do you think of my little invention?
